Montmorillonite KSF as an Inorganic, Water Stable, and Reusable Catalyst for the Knoevenagel Synthesis of Coumarin-3-carboxylic Acids. -The cheap commercially available clay KSF works well as catalyst in the reaction of various salicylic aldehydes (Ia), (Ib), and (VI) with malonic acid in water as solvent to give the corresponding coumarin derivatives (V) and (VII) in high yields (except (Vb)) and selectivities.The reaction of aldehydes (I) with malonate (II) in the absence of solvent and at higher temperatures gives lower yields of condensation products. -(BIGI, FRANCA; CHESINI, LUCA;
