✦ Synopsis
The degradation of the mechanical properties of tetragonal zirconia polycrystals stabilized by 3 mol% yttria (3Y-TZP) upon heating at 100-400 • C can be prevented by heat treatment of the sintered specimens in nitrogen. The post-sintering heat treatment leads to formation of an almost pore-free nitrified surface layer consisting of mainly cubic-phase grains with a small amount of tetragonal precipitates. The nitrified layer has a higher fracture toughness and hardness due to the tetragonal precipitates, but a lower strength. The latter is maintained upon low-temp. annealing. -(CHUNG, T.-
