β¦ Synopsis
Metastable Crystallization of LaZr2F11. -The stable modification of the title compound, Ξ±-LaZr2F11, melts congruently at 789 Β±4 β’ C. Quenching of the melt leads to crystallization of a metastable phase, Ξ²-LaZr2F11. Upon further cooling, this phase undergoes exothermic solid-solid phase transition to the stable Ξ±-phase. This transition is not observed during reheating of the Ξ±-phase. The melting point of the metastable . beta.-LaZr2F11 is about 10 β’ C lower than that of the Ξ±-phase. The transition temp. is higher than the melting points of both the crystalline Ξ± and Ξ² modifications and Ξ²-LaZr2F11 is therefore metastable at all temp. but nucleates more readily from the supercoated melt than Ξ±-LaZr2F11.
