Metal-Catalyzed Transformation of D-Glucal to Optically Active Furan Diol.

-The reaction probably proceeds via initial nucleophilic attack of H 2 O on the glucal. The opening of the pyranose ring is followed by cyclization to the five-membered ring and dehydration.
