Mercury(II) Diphosphate, Hg2P2O7.
-Polycrystalline Hg2P2O7 is prepared by heating a solution of HgO in 50% HNO3 with a small excess of H3PO4 followed by annealing of the residue at 693 K in air (4 d, silica crucible). Single crystals are obtained via chemical vapor transport with PCl5 (823 β 773 K, 19 d). Hg2P2O7 crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P1, Z = 2. The compound is isotypic with Cd2P2O7. The structure consists of alternating layers of P2O7 groups and HgO6 polyhedra, respectively.
