β¦ Synopsis
Low Temperature Specific Heat of CePt 2 -Derived Compounds.
-The magnetic to non-magnetic transition of the title compounds is studied by measuring the low temp. specific heat of Ce(Pt 1-x Mx) 2 (I) (M: Ir, Rh; x β€ 0.5) and of (CexPt 1-x )Pt 2 (II) (x = 0.94 and 0.75) samples. Alloying Ir and Rh on the Pt sites in antiferromagnetic CePt 2 leads to a decrease of T N . For x ΒΏ 0.25 no magnetic order but an increase of the specific heat (C/T) with decreasing temp. below 10 K and a maximum of the electronic part of the specific heat at T ΒΏ 10 K, Ξ³ HT , depending on x are detected. Mechanisms explaining a concentration-dependent maximum in the value of Ξ³ HT are discussed. Ce dilution in (II) also results in an increase of Ξ³ HT with decreasing x and a decrease of T N as a function of x. The enhanced Ξ³ HT in (II) is attributable to a transfer of degrees of freedom from the magnetic ordering to the screening process.
