✦ Synopsis
Long Wavelength Ce 3+ Emission in Y-Si-O-N Materials. -A series of new luminescent materials, Y 5 (SiO 4 ) 3 N:Ce, YSiO 2 N:Cl, Y 4 Si 2 O 7 N 2 :Ce, and Y 2 Si 3 O 3 N 4 :Ce, is prepared from the starting powders CeO 2 , Y 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , and α-Si 3 N 4 . The powders are suspended in acetone followed by firing for 2 h at T ≥ 1500 • C. In a series of these oxynitride materials, long wave length emission of Ce 3+ is observed. A variation of the Ce 3+ emission is observed with maxima up to 504 nm for Y 4 Si 2 O 7 N 2 :Ce. The position of the emission can be explained by three effects, the nephelauxetic effect, the crystal-field splitting, and the Stokes shift. -( VAN KREVEL,
