✦ Synopsis

Ionic Hydrogenation of 2-Naphthol and 1,7-Dihydroxynaphthalene with Cyclohexane in the Presence of Aluminum Halogenides.

-As previously described, hydroxynaphthalene derivatives (I) and (III) activated by aluminum halogenides undergo hydrogenation in the presence of cyclohexane. As for 1-naphthol derivatives, the hydroxyl-containing aromatic ring of 2-naphthol (I) is selectively reduced. In contrast to 1-naphthol derivatives, however, ionic hydrogenation of 2-naphthol is accompanied by alkylation side reactions to a great extent affording about 40% C 6 -alkylated derivatives. The considerable contrast in the reactivity of 1-and 2-naphthol derivatives is demonstrated with 1,7-dihydroxynaphthalene (III) which is exclusively hydrogenated at the ring containing the 1-hydroxyl position. -(KOLTUNOV, K.
