Intramolecular Homolytic Substitution with Amidyl Radicals: A Free-Radical Synthesis of Ebselen and Related Analogues.
-Irradiation of the intermediate imidate esters (II) is found to yield the ebselen analogues (III). Presumably, it proceeds via amidyl radicals which undergo subsequent intramolecular homolytic substitution at the selenium atom with expulsion of a benzyl radical. Unfortunately, ebselen (Vc) itself and its tBu analogue (Va) cannot be prepared by this method. They are available by peroxide-mediated cyclization of diselenobis(benzamides). -(FONG, M. C.;
