Highly Efficient Arylation of Malonates with Diaryliodonium Salts. -The sodium salt of Ξ²-dicarbonyl compounds such as the diethyl malonates (I) readily reacts with symmetrical diaryliodonium salts (II) to yield the arylated derivatives (III). Unsymmetrical substrates [cf. (IV)] react with transfer of the electron-deficient aryl group, suggesting a ion-pair mechanism via a tricoordinated iodine intermediate.
