✦ Synopsis
High Temperature Stability of α-Sialon Ceramics Containing Glass Additions.
-The effect of different cation size sintering aids, Yb 2 O 3 and Nd 2 O 3 , which can stabilize α-sialon, on the α ↔ β sialon transformation of α-sialon and α-β-sialon compositions upon heat treatment for up to 1 month at 1450 • C is studied for hot-pressed mixtures and for pressureless sintered compositions. The latter are enriched by 10 and 20% pre-prepared glass powders to observe the effect of excess liquid phase. The high-temperature stability of the α-sialon phase differs for the two sintering additives. In Nd 2 O 3 -densified materials the transformation mainly depends on the amount and composition of the liquid phase present during heat treatment. In Yb 2 O 3 samples, however, transformation occurs only in the presence of β-sialon which probably acts as nucleation sites for the transformation. -(MANDAL, H.; THOMPSON, D.
