Fabrication of Transparent Yttria Ceramics at Low Temperature Using Carbonate-Derived Powder.

-A new preparation method for a highly sinterable yttria powder is developed that uses a fine and needle-shaped yttrium carbonate prepared by a precipitation and aging method as precursor. The obtained yttria crystallites have a size of ≈0.1 µm and weakly agglomerate to a size of ≈0.3 µm. The powder has a very high sinterability and the sintered, transparent ceramics exhibits a homogeneous microstructure with no abnormal grain growth. -(SAITO, N.;
