The electronic structures of the novel compounds NaSm2Se3 (Fm3m, Z = 4, NaCl-type) and MSm8Se12 (M: Na, Ca; I43d, Z = 4/3, Th3P4-type), prepared by reduction of Sm2Se3 with Na and Ca, resp., are determined by magnetic measurements and band structure calculations. A new modification of Sm2Se3 with U2S3-type structure is obtained. According to the magnetic susceptibility and XANES measurements, M2Sm8Se12 can be formulated as semiconducting (Na+)(Sm2+)(Sm3+)7(Se2-)12 and (Ca2+)( Sm2+)2(Sm3+)6(Se2-)12 and NaSm2Se3 as metallic (Na+)(Sm2+)0.5(Sm3+)1.5( e-)0.5(Se2-)3.
