Electron Transfer-Induced Sequential Transformations of Malonates by the Ferrocenium Ion.

-Ferrocenium hexafluorophosphate is introduced as mild, efficient and selective single electron oxidant for enolates. Product distribution depends on the substituents at the double bond. Trapping of the intermediate radical with TEMPO (X) and subsequent reductive N-O bond cleavage provides lactones in excellent yields. -(JAHN, U.; HART-
