Effects of Yttrium Doping α-Alumina. Part 1. Microstructure and Microchemistry.

-In hot-pressed α-Al 2 O 3 doped with 1000 ppm Y, yttrium exists at grain boundaries as a segregant ion and in second phase Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (YAG) particles. The doped ceramics show a bimodal grain-size distribution that is closely related to the frequency of YAG particles. The average amount of yttrium at grain boundaries and triple points is 3.3 atoms/nm 2 . -
