✦ Synopsis
Effect of Zn Additives to the Electrolyte on the Corrosion and Cycle
Life of Some AB5Hx Metal Hydride Electrodes.
-The title studies are performed on four electrodes with A: La, La + Ce, or mischmetal and B5: Ni3.55Co0.75Mn0.4Al0.3 with electrolytes containing 0.5 M ZnO in 6 M KOH using XANES at the Ni K edge to investigate the Ni corrosion. In the presence of zincate electrolytes the cycle life of Ce-free alloys is significantly improved while in alloys containing Ce, which imparts passive protection against corrosion, no additional improvement is obtained with zincate electrolytes. The XANES spectra reveal a significant decrease of Ni corrosion and reduced buildup of surface Ni(OH)2 on alloys containing no Ce in the presence of zincate in the electrolyte.
