Desulfurization of N-Substituted 2-Thioxothiazolidin-4-ones with Aqueous Solutions of Monochloroacetic Acid.

-Reaction of title thioxothiazolidinones as well as their alkylene(arylene)bis(thiazolidine) analogues (I) and (V) with chloroacetic acid (II) proceeds by ring opening to afford the corresponding thiocarbamoylthioacetic acid derivatives [cf. compound (II)], introduction of the carboxymethyl group to its enethiol tautomer and hydrolytic cleavage of mercaptoacetic acid to furnish thiazolidinedione derivatives (IV) and (VI). -(ORLINSKII, M.
