Dedensification and Anomalous Grain Growth During Sintering of Undoped Barium Titanate.
-The dedensification during natural sintering of commercial BaTiO3 is studied by dilatometry. Solid-state and liquid-phase nucleation of abnormal grains is observed at low heating rates. The final grain size depends on the heating rate and the type of nucleation. Solid-state abnormal grain growth at temp. ¡ 1320 • does not lead to desintering while the onset of abnormal grain growth at ≈1320. degree. during sintering in the presence of a liquid phase results in a coarse-grained microstructure and dedensification. The latter is due to an expansion of the interconnected network during growth of large rounded grains at temp. ¿ 1320 • C and the induction of tensile stress on the porous fine-grained matrix.
