✦ Synopsis
Dealkylation of Alkyl and Aryl Ethers with AlCl 3 -NaI in the Absence of Solvent.
-The method is not suitable for the conversion of cholesteryl methyl ether to cholesterol and for the demethylation of 1-methoxynaphthalene which sublimes under the reaction conditions. A further disadvantage could be the formation of small amounts of iodine which can react with sensitive functional groups. Thus, allyl phenyl ether gives a mixture of products under the reaction conditions.
