β¦ Synopsis
The crystallization of sodium birnessite (III) and accompanying phase transformations are studied by XRD, IR and SEM. The synthesis procedure contains three steps: formation of Mn(OH) 2 , oxidation of Mn(OH) 2 to a MnOx suspension by KMnO 4 and aging of the MnOx suspension to form birnessite. The crystallization of birnessite is accompanied by the crystallization and phase transformation of feitknechtite (Ξ²-MnOOH). Temperature and MnO -4 /Mn 2+ ratio strongly effect the crystallization process. A possible route and mechanism for the formation of birnessite from MnOx gel via buserite as a short-lived precursor is proposed. -(LUO,
