✦ Synopsis
Crystal Structures and Preparation of K2AgVS4 and Rb2AgVS4 by Using the Molten Flux Method: Low-Dimensional Materials with Infinite Metal-Ion-Centered Tetrahedra Chains.
-Violet needle-shaped crystals of the title compounds are prepared by the reactive flux method. Structure determination of powder single crystal XRD show that the compounds (orthorhombic, Fddd, Z = 8) are isotypic with K2CuVS4 and the selenides K2CuMSe4 (M: Nb, Ta). The structure consists of infinite chains of alternating AgS4 and VS4 tetrahedra running along the a axis. The chains are connected by K+ and Rb+ ions which are 8-fold coordinated with sulfur. Each AS8 (A: K, Rb) polyhedron is connected to three different chains. The V-Ag distances of 2.904 and 2.910 Å for the K and Rb compound, resp., exclude interatomic bonding. Contrary to normal V-S distances, the Ag-S distances are the shortest hitherto known indicating strong covalent bonding between
