Crystal Structure of a Complex Barium, Aluminum, Copper(II) Fluoride: Ba 4 Cu 2 Al 3 F 21 . -The title compound is prepared from BaF 2 , CuF 2 and AlF 3 . The orthorhombic crystal structure is solved in the space group P2 1 2 1 2 1 Z = 4 (single crystal XRD). It consists in a succession along c of eight layers of two different types of sheets. The first layer, formulated as [Cu 2 AlF 11 ] 4-, in which Cu-F octahedra are linked by edges to form infinite distorted chains connected by Al-F octahedra, is followed by two [Al 2 F 10 ] 4- layers of infinite cis-chains of Al-F octahedra linked by two vertices and another [Cu 2 AlF 11 ] 4-layer. These four layers are doubled along c by one of the screw-axes 2 1 . The Ba ions, 12-coordinated, are inserted between the sheets.
