Crystal Growth and Magnetic Measurements on Aligned Single Crystals of the Oxides Sr 3 NiPtO 6 and Sr 3 CuPtO 6 .
-Single crystals of the title compounds are obtained from a K 2 CO 3 flux containing SrCO 3 , NiO, CuO, and Pt (1050 โข C, 72 h). Single crystal XRD for the Ni compound shows a trigonal structure, space group R3c with Z = 6. It contains infinite chains of alternating, face-sharing PtO 6 octahedra and NiO 6 trigonal prisms. The Cu compound is structurally analogous to the Ni compound. The presence of Ni II ions with a large single-ion anisotropy is indicated by magnetic susceptibility studies on oriented single crystals of Sr 3
