β¦ Synopsis
Corrosion of Iron Base Alloys and High Alloy Steels in the Li2CO3-K2CO3 Eutectic Mixture. -The corrosion behavior of binary Fe alloys and of three alloy steels is studied under simulated fuel cell conditions, i.e. in a eutectic 62 mol.% LiCO3-38 mol.% K2CO3 mixture at 650 β’ C in N2-15 vol.% O2 with 15 and 25 vol.% CO2. While iron undergoes fast corrosion with formation of layers of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 after short (50 h) and of LiFeO2 and LiFeO8 after longer (2000 h) times, high alloy steels (12-15 wt.% Cr) corrode much slower. However, the formation of LiCrO2, K2CrO4, and LiFeO2 from steels with 24-26 wt.% Cr after 5000 h leads to high metal losses due to the solubility of K2CrO4 in the melt.
