✦ Synopsis

Corrosion Behavior of a Novel SiC/Al 2 O 3 /Al Composite Exposed to Chloride Environments.

-A direct metal oxidation technique is applied to produce a new Al metal matrix composite (Lanxide As-109 r ) containing 69 vol% SiC, 24 vol% Al 2 O 3 , and 7 vol% retained Al. The corrosion behavior of this composite in chloride media is found to be independent on the NaCl concentration and the pH value. The Al alloy phase of the composite is susceptible to pitting corrosion at open circuit in 6β€’10 -1 to 6β€’10 -3 M NaCl solutions, but not in 6β€’10 -4 M NaCl. The pitting potential of SiC/Al 2 O 3 /Al decreases by 80 mV per order of magnitude increase in the NaCl concentration.
