β¦ Synopsis
Conversion of Hydroxy Nitriles to Lactones Using Rhodococcus rhodochrous Whole Cells.
-Lactones are synthesized from hydroxy nitriles in one step under very mild conditions by microbial hydrolysis and lactonization using R. rhodochrous whole cells. Younger, actively growing cell cultures afford a modest enantioselectivity in the formation of (R)-(II) at the expense of the chemical yield. In contrast, older, resting cells provide very good yields of the lactones, e.g. rac. (II), with little or no enantioselectivity. -
