Conjugated Macrocycles Related to the Porphyrins. Part 17. Oxidation with Dilute Aqueous Ferric Chloride Solutions Greatly Improves Yields in the [4 + 1] Synthesis of Sapphyrins.

-The '4+1' route to porphyrins is extremely improved by use of 0.1% aqueous ferric chloride as oxidant in place of DDQ, e.g. the yield of derivative (IIIe) is increased from 16% (DDQ) to 74% (FeCl 3 ). The yields of carbasapphyrins (IV) are lower (12-38%) but also greatly benefited from this approach. -(
