✦ Synopsis

Comparisons Between Haydeeite, α-Cu 3 Mg(OD) 6 Cl 2 , and Kapellasite, α-Cu3Zn(OD)6Cl2, Isostructural S = 1/2 Kagome Magnets. -The title compounds are prepared by refluxing Cu powder in a solution of MgCl2 or ZnCl2 in D2O with four ground glass beads, each with an approximate radius of 1 mm and a surface area of 12.5 mm 2 (as a nucleation surface) and slow oxygen bubbling. The samples are characterized by powder neutron diffraction and magnetic measurements. The compounds crystallize in the space group P3m1 at 1.5 K. The new S = 1/2 frustrated Kagome magnet α-Cu3Mg(OD)6Cl2 undergoes a transition below 4.2 K to a state that is dominantly ferromagnetic but does involve an antiferromagnetic contribution. The similarities between the low temperature nuclear structure of the title compounds support suggestions that the nature of the nominally diamagnetic metal ion site and the magnitude of the diagonal exchange that it mediates are of crucial importance in these Kagome magnets.
