Chemistry of Indoles Carrying a Basic Function. Part 3. Synthesis of Spiro(cyclopropane-1,3'(3H)indol)-2'(1'H)-ones with Antihypoxic Effects.

-Hydroxyindolones (I) are converted into isatinylidenes (II)-(V) by dehydration. The stereochemical outcome of this reaction (E/Z-geometry) can be rationalized in terms of stereoelectronic factors. In a few cases dimertype compounds, e.g. (III) are observed. Some of the cyclopropane derivatives derived from (II) or (V) show protective effects against hypobaric hypoxia. -
