Catalytic Oxidation Reactions of Furan and Hydrofuran Compounds. Part 5. Hydroxy-, Ethoxydihydrofurans and Ethoxyfuran -New Products of Reaction of Furan with Hydrogen Peroxide.

-The vanadyl sulfate-catalyzed oxidation of furan (I) with hydrogen peroxide affords a mixture of dihydroxydihydrofuran, hydroxyfuranone and hydroxyfuran derivatives, the corresponding ethoxy derivatives as well as their open-chain analogues. Using NMR and MS techniques, over fifteen compounds are identified and characterized. A plausible reaction mechanism is given. -(POSKONIN, V.
