✦ Synopsis
Carbothermal Synthesis of TiC Whiskers via a Vapor-Liquid-Solid Growth Mechanism.
-TiC whiskers of ≈1 µm particle diameter and 10-30 µm length are prepared in 80-90 Vol.% yield by the title mechanism at temp. ranging from 1200-1600 • C in an Ar atmosphere. Starting from TiO2 and C using Ni as catalyst and NaCl as volatilizing agent for transport of Ti, mostly as TiCl3 (g), TiC whiskers are formed containing TiC particles, small amounts of oxygen, unreacted carbon, and Ni as the main impurities. No secondary thickening after completion of whisker growth is observed. -(AHLEN, N.;
