✦ Synopsis

Benzocarbacephems from Quinolines.

-The azetidinones (V) and (VI) are prepared from simple quinoline derivatives (I) in good overall yields. While the four-membered ring of related benzocarbapenems is formed with tris(2-oxobenzoxazol-3-yl)phosphine oxide, MesCl is the reagent of choice in case of benzocarbacephems. The unsaturated azetidinone (VIII) is obtained from (Va) by stereoselective radical bromination followed by dehydrobromination.
