An AFM Study of the Properties of Passive Films on Iron Surfaces.

-Freshly polished Fe surfaces can be passivated in a borate solution by cyclic voltammetry. The films formed are not perfect, and defect sites remain which allow localized corrosion to occur. In situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy (ECAFM) is used to examine these defects directly and to observe the initial corrosion process. -(LI,
