Alternating Addition of Carbon-Centered Radicals to Unsaturated Systems. Novel Homolytic Aromatic Substitutions.
-A novel aromatic substitution of arenes such as (III) is based on the generation of alkyl radicals from carboxylic acids which add to maleic anhydride (I) and subsequent attack of the newly formed electrophilic radical to the nucleophilic arene (III). Alkyl radicals oxidatively generated from the solvents cyclohexane (V) or dioxane (VII) are capable of undergoing this reaction also. -(ARA-
