✦ Synopsis

Action of Ammonium Chloride and Bromide on Vanadium, Niobium and Tantalum:

Synthesis and Crystal Structures of (NH4)2(V(NH3)X5), (NH4)6( (M5(NH)4)X17) (M: Nb, Ta), (NH4)2(NbX6), and (NH4)3(Ta2NX10) (X: Cl, Br). -The reaction of NH4Cl or NH4Br with metallic V, Nb, and Ta at moderate temp. (320-430 β€’ C) yields nine of the title compounds. Vanadium is oxidized only to the +3 state, Nb to +3.8 and +4, and Ta to +3.8 and +5. Single crystal XRD data are reported for (NH4)2(V(NH3)Br5) ( orthorhombic, space group Pnma, Z = 4), (NH4)6(Ta5(NH)4Cl17) ( tetragonal, I4/mmm, Z = 2), (NH4)2(NbBr6) (cubic, Fm3m, Z = 4), (NH4)3( Ta2NCl10) (tetragonal, I4/mmm, Z = 2), and (NH4)3(Ta2NBr10) ( tetragonal, P4/mnc, Z = 2). -(SIMON, M.; MEYER,
