-The key steps in the synthesis of the title alkaloid (VII) are cyclization of the bromide (IV) and subsequent reductive ring opening yielding the alcohol (VI). The dimer (IX) shows high anti-HIV activity and good antimalarial activity, but it is less potent than (VII). -(BRINGMANN, G.;
