✦ Synopsis

In connection with the synthesis of tetronic acids (cf. (IV)) whose salts have inhibitory activity against HIV-1 protease, a new method for the selective oxidation of the cyclic Ξ²-keto ester (II) to the corresponding 1,3-dicarbonyl ester (III) is described. Application of this reaction to further cyclic examples provides the diketo ester. In the case of acyclic substrates an olefinic product is obtained. -(MITTRA, A.;
