A protonation with triflic acid leads to the triflate (VII) which readily reacts with the diene (VIII) to give the diol (IX) as a single isomer. The use of an uncoordinated vinyl silane (X) yields a mixture of isomers. (III) can also be converted to the triene (XIV) providing the single isomer (XV) by intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction. -(SIEBURTH, SCOTT
