A Practical Synthesis of 4'-Methylbiphenyl-2-carbonitrile as a Key Intermediate of Angiotensin II Antagonists.

-A novel and practical synthesis of the title carbonitrile (VI), which is applicable to industrial scale production, is described. The key feature of the short sequence is the Pdcatalyzed dehydrogenation/ decarbonylation of (V), which proceeds selectively in the presence of hydrogen acceptors such as maleic diesters or oxygen. -
