β¦ Synopsis
A Novel Method for the Nitration of Simple Aromatic Compounds.
-The proton form of zeolite Ξ² is an effective catalyst for the nitration of benzene, alkylbenzenes, halogenobenzenes, and some disubstituted benzenes with stoichiometric quantities of HNO 3 and acetic anhydride to give mononitrated products with excellent para selectivities and high yields. The new method is applicable to a range of substrates, which are the ones that often give selectivity problems in traditional nitrations, e.g. compounds (Vb) and (X). The method has a number of practical advantages (no solvent is required, inexpensive reagents in only stoichiometric amounts are needed, the only by-product AcOH can be easily separated and the zeolite can be recycled) that makes it attractive for commercial application. The new method has no selectivity advantages over traditional nitrations for 1,2-dihalobenzenes such as (Va). Other limitations are discussed. -(SMITH, KEITH; MUSSON, ADAM; DEBOOS, GARETH A.;
