A Novel Cyclodimerization of Arylidenecyanoacetate Promoted by Samarium Diiodide.

-Reductive treatment of arylidenecyanoacetates with SmI 2 results in cyclodimerization to the aminocyclopentenes (II). However, the hydroxyphenyl-substituted substrate yields only the double bond reductive product (VI) and the dimer (VII). The latter type of product is also obtained from (Ib) in the presence of tBuOH.
