-A convenient synthesis of title compound (IV) is developed in context with studies on the role of (Z)-monolignols in liquifaction. Key step in this synthesis is the Still and Gennari modification of the Horner-Emmons olefination to produce (Z)-unsaturated ester (III) from acetylated vanillin (I).The synthetic lignin prepared by treatment of (IV) with peroxidase and H 2 O 2 contains unsaturated sidechains having the geometry of the parent coniferyl alcohol. -(RALPH,
