compound (I) is isolated in the course of attempts to introduce NO 3 groups into derivatives of the Tl "1201" structure. According to the powder XRD data, (I) (tetragonal, P4/mmm) contains Cr(VI) similar to the 77 K superconductor (Tl 2/3 Cr 1/3 ) Sr 4 Cu 2 (CO 3 )O 7 (II), but consists of an interg

✦ Synopsis
Tl-2201 superconductor is discovered by high-resolution time-of-flight neutron and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction studies of "orthorhombic Tl-2201". Oxygen-rich compositions with Tc values up to 50 K are monoclinic whereas less oxidized samples with Tc values of 50-90 K are orthorhombic (Fmmm). The monoclinic to orthorhombic transition is due to a loss of interstitial oxygen whereas the orthorhombic transition to the tetragonal Tl-2201 phase at higher temp. involves the loss of Tl2O3 and the substitution of 5% Cu at the Tl site.
