A New Mixed Oxide with (Bi12O14)n Columns: PbBi12Mo5O34.

-Single crystals of the title compound are prepared by melting a mixture of Bi2O3, MoO3, and PbO at 1223 K (1 h, Pt crucible, slow cooling). PbBi12Mo5O34 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2/c, with Z = 2. The structure consists of (Bi12O14)8n+n columns surrounded by MoO2-4 tetrahedra. The Pb atoms occupy specific sites between four tetrahedra.
