A General and Mild Synthesis of Thioesters and Thiols from Halides.

-A variety of organic halides undergoes nucleophilic displacement with potassium thioacetate to yield thioesters under mild conditions. The generality of the method is tested with a broad spectrum of functionalities in the substrates. The thioesters can be readily converted to the corresponding thiols with NaOH.
