In view of the interest in the synthesis of diimine-ligated transition metal complexes as components of efficient catalyst systems, a new method for the preparation of 1,4-diazabutadienes is developed. Starting from silyl-protected dialkynyl-1,2-dione (I) they are easily accessible by reaction with
