In continuation of a research on isoquinoline alkaloids, the formation of protoberberines (cf. (II)) from stereochemically defined isoquinolines such as (I) is described. Acidic treatment of (II) or its educt (I) results in formation of the expected 8H-berberine (III). -(TELLITU, I.;
