โœฆ Synopsis

The pyridine-insoluble residues of telocollinites and sporinites previously separated from British Carboniferous coals have been investigated further. Treatment with alkaline-ethane-l:2 diol at 300ยฐC gave only a few per cent of soluble material. 13C CP/MAS n.m.r. spectra of the insoluble residues confirmed and extended previous conclusions. The organic matrices of the sporinites appeared to have a common structure consisting ofan aliphatic macromolecule substituted by aromatic, often phenolic rings. The organic matrices of the telocollinites consisted of aromatic rings connected by small hydroaromatic structures and substituted by small alkyl groups. The n.m.r. spectra gave little evidence ofa common structure. Proton relaxation times showed all the insoluble residues to contain (n.m.r.) mobile material.
