β¦ Synopsis
Some examples of recent applications of low energy and high resolution neutron spectroscopy in chemical physics are discussed. These include (1) brief descriptions of research on translation-rotation coupling in solids, focused on alkali cyanides and alkali cyanide mixed salts, (2) a discussion of the probing of non-bonded potentials in molecular .solids by a study of rotational modes and tunnel splittings and (3) the use of low energy neutrons to study the mechanism of translational diffusion and reorientation in molecular complexes, ionic conductors and intercalation compounds. The illustrative examples described demonstrate the application of modem low energy neutron scattering spectroscopy over five orders of magnitude in time and energy (0.I-t0000/.teV). The importance of future research using neutron methods to study molecular dynamics in dilute and low-dimensional systems is stressed.
