✦ Synopsis

Polystyrene has been chemically modified by Friedel-Crafts acylation with cis-1,2,3,6 tetrahydrophthalic anhydride in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride. The product, polyl-4-vinylphenyl-2'carboxy-4' ene-cyclohexyl ketone], has been characterized by solubility studies, chemical analysis, i.r., ion-exchange capacity measurements and pH-titration behaviour. Thermal stability measurements indicate improved properties relative to the parent polymer. In the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid, the keto-acid is cyclized to a polymer of further improved thermal stability.
